Genre Project

After each library visit, students read their assigned genre and enter the information into the genre project sheet. The following is how I explain the project to parents, but feel free to modify and tweak anything that needs done! Rigor and prompts can be edited for different age groups.

The teacher assigns a genre for that specific library day, and students choose any book of their choice in that genre. Students fill out the top of the project sheet as soon as we return to the classroom. I document on a separate sheet of the book and author so that there are no accidental repeats when they get a free choice. I also have them rate the book at the end of their reading.

Students must get a book with a minimum of 100 pages. Each night the student reads one tenth of the book. After reading, the student fills in one prompt a night with the correlating pages read, date, and parent signature.

The bolded prompts are the "mandatory" prompts that I use every time. The bolded prompts follow the plot line, and show the mastery and understanding of the book. The unbolded prompts are more on the creative or higher level scale. I tend to put a bolded and unbolded one together towards the end of the book. *Realize that each prompt isn't always hit in each tenth of the reading, therefore they may need t read a bit more or wait until the next homework assignment.*

Each day, students turn in the assignment and I check it. If a student doesn't complete last night's homework, they do not get the stamp/points for that portion. Each prompt is worth ten points if you do ten prompts, but stamps can be granted to the top of the page as well.
