What educators are saying
Description
In just one class period, your students will not only understand the importance of creating and sticking to a budget, but also practice creating one!
- Students are randomly given a "career card" with correlating annual salary and average student loan debt, if applicable.
- They will then use a chart to determine how much of their salary will be taken out in the form of federal tax withholding, state tax withholding, social security, and medicare.
- They'll then be given a set of choice cards (including pictures- this is the file you can preview) that outline three expense options (high, middle, and low) for each possible area of budgeting, including housing, transportation, food, subscriptions, medical and childcare, travel and entertainment, other discretionary spending, debt payments, and savings.
- Students will record their monthly budget choices on a budget calculator page to determine if they can afford what they want to buy; it requires students to choose certain areas they're willing to cut back on in order to afford more luxury items in a different category.
- An extension is included for students to have the option of getting a roommate and/or having a child or children.
- Instructions are included.
This is SUCH a fun simulation! My students always LOVE this one! This experience will be one they'll be talking about!
