Gallipoli Campaign History Source Analysis Activities
What educators are saying
Description
An engaging World War One resource for teaching about the experiences of Australians fighting during the Gallipoli Campaign while also developing student's source analysis skills.
Perfect for anyone teaching Year 9 History in Humanities and Social Sciences, as this resource has been created to meet the following Australian Curriculum criteria:
- The places where Australians fought and the nature of warfare during World War I, including the Gallipoli campaign (ACDSEH095)
- Using sources to investigate the fighting at Gallipoli, the difficulties of trench warfare, and the use of tanks, aeroplanes and chemical weapons (gas)
This 16-page resource contains 8 visual primary sources depicting different aspects of Gallipoli, complete with 3-page source analysis table, comprehension questions and a letter home writing activity.
Students rotate through each source, carefully examining each detail to reveal the source message and what it teaches them about the fighting at Gallipoli. This activity not only develops source analysis skills but improves student's collaboration and teamwork abilities.
Students utilize their analysis to complete five comprehension questions about the conditions at Gallipoli, fighting, experiences of the soldiers and significance of the campaign. To complete the task, students write a letter home to Australia from the perspective of a soldier at Gallipoli, drawing inspiration from the source analysis activity. Extension activity about censorship and the home front is also included.
