What educators are saying

I really enjoyed this resource! It was something that the students seemed to enjoy, I would definitely use again for my science class.
This is a fantastic lab! Genetics labs are always fun, but adding food to the mix made this even more engaging for students.
Also included in
  1. The DNA & Heredity MEGA Bundle is here! This bundle contains labs, guided notes, PowerPoints, practice assignments, and much more. I think you will find that the activities included work great for all kinds of learners from 6th grade all the way through 9th grade. Students will learn about DNA b

Description

Gummy Bear Genetics is a lab used to investigate and discover how traits are inherited. The lab replicates Gregory Mendel's famous pea plant experiments. This lab can be used to introduce and discover genetics or as reinforcement.

Students will work on making predictions, forming conclusion with evidence, calculating probability, and collaborating to solve an inquiry based lab.

Teachers only need paper lunch bags and gummy bears.

Lesson includes:

  • Teacher preparations and lab directions
  • Student lab and reflection
  • Genetics Cornell Notes
  • Punnett Square Extension
  • Modification ideas
  • Sample student Responses
  • New: Includes a Google Slides digital version of the lab - no need to send home gummy bears to students working from home.

*Note: This activity is also part of my brand new DNA Unit MEGA Bundle! If you are looking for more activities to support your DNA Unit, check this out. It has labs, PowerPoints, review activities, Punnett Square practice, guided notes, InterActive Notebook study tools, and much more. See the links below for more details on everything included:

NGSSMS-LS3-1
Develop and use a model to describe why structural changes to genes (mutations) located on chromosomes may affect proteins and may result in harmful, beneficial, or neutral effects to the structure and function of the organism. Emphasis is on conceptual understanding that changes in genetic material may result in making different proteins. Assessment does not include specific changes at the molecular level, mechanisms for protein synthesis, or specific types of mutations.
NGSSMS-LS3-2
Develop and use a model to describe why asexual reproduction results in offspring with identical genetic information and sexual reproduction results in offspring with genetic variation. Emphasis is on using models such as Punnett squares, diagrams, and simulations to describe the cause and effect relationship of gene transmission from parent(s) to offspring and resulting genetic variation.
