THE JABBERWOCKY: Guided Reading Plans, resources, activities and answer key

This product has been developed as part of a week long Guided Reading Unit using the poem:

    "Jabberwocky" by Lewis Carroll

In the poem, a child hunts the dreaded Jabberwocky, kills the monster and returns the head of the beast to his father who celebrates the brave deed. With a complete set of nonsense words, this makes a great poem to study with your students. This product makes the teaching easy and provides the plans and resources to support you - included an answer key too.

We have put together our 5 detailed lesson plans which include notes on how to introduce the poem using a You Tube clip - the link is included in the teaching plans, before reading it yourself. The students therefore hear a professional recital of the poem and understand how fluency, pace and expression should be used.

    Included in this product:

    • 5 day, detailed lesson plan identifying how to teach the reading of the poem and links with specific resources included and when/how to use them.
    • 6 photocopiable resources for the class to use
    • Answer Key for each activity

Over the five lessons, the development of the reading of the poem is clear:

Day 1: Hear the poem for the first time, read it aloud together, trying to keep together

Day 2: Continue to practice the poem, adding in expression for how the character is discussing their illnesses - this also develops language knowledge too.

Day 3: Develop a chorus and split the group into two separate roles

Day 4: Group chorus to be developed further and individual children reading sections and finally, the whole poem with fluency and expression

Day 5: Work through the repertoire which the children now have - group performance, solo and group chorus. Day 5 also includes opportunities for assessment and target setting to reflect on next steps in learning.

Each day, not only do the children learn how to read, recite and perform poetry through a range of activities, but they get to know the poem in greater depth by completing 6 activities:

    • Activity 1: Word search identifying new vocabulary
    • Activity 2: Linking new vocabulary to its definition
    • Activity 3: Give the definition to the new vocabulary
    • Activity 4: Sequencing key events in the poem (5 sets of sentences to sort)
    • Activity 5: Poetry observation - questions about the poem and rhyme scheme
    • Activity 6: Comprehension questions and focus on the rhyme scheme

Each activity has its' own answer key, and can form part of the lesson, as is dictated in the lesson plan, or can be provided as a home-based activity, early morning activity, early finisher, or Literacy Center activity.

This plan will easily cover a weeks' worth of Guided Reading sessions, and by the end of the week, the children will have learnt the poem off by heart - so why not celebrate by performing it to an audience?

THE JABBERWOCKY ESCAPE ROOM - 9 Challenges

Using an Escape Room to develop curriculum knowledge is an exciting activity that will inspire learners from 2nd to 5th Grade. This Escape Room is a great resource for exploring the poem “The Jabberwocky” by Lewis Carroll. It makes a fantastic, fun, engaging – yet thought-provoking activity to share with students as part of a study unit on “The Jabberwocky”.

The curriculum content of this Escape Room is linked to the features, content and poem of The Jabberwocky.

Students become a part of the hunt for the Jabberwocky and each challenge provides further information for the students to collect, moving through the poem via the vocabulary challenges, the code given by the JubJub bird, the searching for the beast through the foresty maze before killing the Jabberwock and exiting the Escape Room. Each challenge takes a specific element from the poem, from character description, sequencing, matching vocabulary, identifying information, problem solving with a maze and word identification.

The aim of the Escape Room is to provide jeopardy for the students to work under pressure to solve 9 challenges to help develop their knowledge of “The Jabberwocky”. As the students successfully solve each challenge, they gather more knowledge of the poem, including the challenging language created by Lewis Carroll to fully understand the events within the poem.

Included within this Escape Room is everything you need (with the exception of the poem which will need to be provided):

    • Pupil Answer Book (Code Key Booklet)
    • Answer Booklet for teachers
    • Starting script to set the scene of the Escape Room and explain what the students must do
    • Concluding script, celebrating the learning which has taken place and allows the students to “leave” the Escape Room
    • Table labels for students to name their own teams
    • Full instructions to be able to simply print and go within your own classroom

Before beginning, you will need to prepare the following – all included within this product:

    • A copy of the Pupil Workbook for each group
    • A set of table team names for every group – prepared beforehand and given to each group to set up their own working space
    • Initial Starting Script sharing the problem to the children
    • Completion Script celebrating the completion of the challenge
    • Not included in the pack – a copy of the poem for each team to use to refer to as the escape room develops.

Students do not need prior knowledge of the poem as the challenges are explained and structured in a way that will support them (however, a copy of the poem should be provided to each group to support sequencing activity). Therefore this Escape Room is ideal as a starter activity when learning about the work of Lewis Carroll, a mid-way session to break up the learning and embed what has been read, or as a review of learning to identify what the students have learnt and retained.

The activity begins by the teacher reader the Initial Message received. It clearly tells the students that they have 9 challenges to complete which differ in the skills needed to be able to identify, find and support the actions to get rid of the Jabberwocky and save the village from its’ threat.

After the 9th activity, the teacher can read the final script which reviews the learning the students have undertaken as they have completed each of the challenges. This script, together with team labels and the opening challenge script are contained within the Resource Pack.

Each activity focuses and builds the students’ knowledge of “The Jabberwocky” by Lewis Carroll.

The 9 activities are based on the following outcomes:

    • Word search of key vocabulary developed by Lewis Carroll and included within the poem
    • Decipher key words from the poem which have been jumbled up – then collect the code alongside each word to support in completing challenge three
    • Link the code from each word to discover its’ meaning – students then learn the vocabulary of the poem and can understand the content with greater clarity
    • Following this, the students meet the JubJub bird who provide a coded message for them to follow. Using the code, the students must reveal the message to help them in their quest
    • Enter the maze and move around the forest to find the Jabberwock
    • Describe the Jabberwock in order of the poet’s description – follow the lines from the feature to the order in which it appears in the poem
    • Label an image of the battle scene with key features as described in the poem, from the forest to the claws and jaws of the beast, to the eyes, its’ movement, breathing and the sword which kills the monster
    • Sequence sentences and parts of sentences from the poem – progressively more detailed as the students move through this challenge
    • True or false – using their knowledge from the poem, read the statements and decide whether they are true or false.

When all 9 activities are completed, and the students have been successful in each, the final celebratory script can be read which reviews the learning and informs the students that they have been successful and can leave the village a safer place, and exit the Escape Room.

    Setting up the Escape Room

    1. Students should be split into groups of no more than four and be placed in their own workspace.

    2. Each group should have a Code Key Booklet and decide on a team name. A copy of the poem should also be provided (this can be found readily online if not already in school).

    3. Read the Initial Message to the students to set the challenge in context. Discuss what this means, and what the activity entails.

    4. Turn to Code Key 1. Agree with the students a set time to complete the problem in – this ensures that the students stay on task and maintains the Escape Room element of working under pressure.

    5. At the end of the time, students should have filled in the Code Key in their booklet. The teacher can then check the accuracy of all the groups and talk through the responses the children should have.

    6. Move on through the remaining challenges until all 9 have been completed.

    7. For those groups who have been successful, they are then able to read the completed statement where they find out if they have escaped the Escape Room!

There are other ways of running Escape Room activities, for example, each activity could be set up on 9 tables and the children then move from table to table completing the activity.

The Escape Room should last for at least 2 hours.

We hope that your children enjoy this Escape Room.
