Common Core has taken over the country! In many states, it has been adopted. In some, it has been adopted but small changes have been made. In all of these cases, we, as teachers, are expected to provide "Standards Based" formative assessment opportunities to determine whether students demonstrate mastery, satisfactory, needing improvement, or needs additional instruction/intervention.

Usually, our go to assessment is a quick "multiple choice" assessment. But, honestly, what information does that give us as a teacher? NOTHING! How do you know if they actually know how to do what is being asked or just go lucky? Just because they got lucky doesn't mean they demonstrate mastery.

For this reason, I have created meaningful Standards Based formative assessment opportunities that are all application (story problem) based. Students are asked to show their thinking in words and/or pictures. Using the rubric provided on each page, the teacher will score the assessment. By students showing their work, the teacher can quickly see if students know how to do it and do it correctly; know how to do it but get the wrong answer; get the correct answer but doesn't show thinking; or just doesn't know the process or the answer. The rubric ranges from a 0-4. With 3/4 demonstrating proficiency.
