Description

Do your students struggle to connect their ideas when writing essays? This fun and engaging game helps students analyze how to logically connect ideas with transition words and phrases.

First, the class is divided into 8 teams and given 10 cards each. Each card has a transition word or phrase that could be used to connect ideas when writing an essay.

Transition category posters are placed at random on the classroom walls. These categories include cause and effect, time, addition, contrast, support, importance, comparison, clarification, concession, and conclusion.

Next, 1 member of each team is blindfolded and given one of the transition cards. The "seeing" members of the team call out directions as they guide their blindfolded teammate to the category that best describes that transition's purpose. This helps students better understand how transition words connect their ideas.

Once every team has placed their cards around the room pin-the-tail-on-the-donkey-style, the class goes over the category posters and the transition words and phrases that have been "pinned" to each one. If the class disagrees with a placement, they can choose to move a transition from one category to another.

These posters stay on the classroom walls throughout the rest of the writing unit or even the rest of the school year to help students see which transitions they should use to better connect their ideas in their writing.

This activity is fun and engaging but also super helpful!
