Description

Celebrate Indigenous People's Day in a way that highlights the beauty of native culture while creating an inclusive and culturally responsive classroom!

In our class we read the story Fry Bread: A Native American Family Story by Kevin Noble Maillard and discussed how food can be an easy way to celebrate and share culture within families and among friends.

During the story we had some takeaways:

  • Indigenous People exist today
  • That they live all over the world and are made up of many nations (or tribes)
  • Indigenous People look different around the world, speak different languages, and have different traditions and food

This is a great way to discuss Indigenous Peoples for younger students while making connections to their own lives - inviting students to be a part of the discussion!

We discussed why Fry Bread has become a recipe passed down through the generations in Native American families and that there are a variety of "Fry Bread" recipes throughout many cultures (i.e. tortillas of Mexico and naan of India).

Then, we segued into how we have helped make a recipe with our own families such as a grandmother's cookie recipe to making homemade red sauce for pizza. Students used this handout to draw a picture of them with their family making a meal together and practiced inventive spelling to finish the sentence.
