Frogs Common Core Packet Rationale

The poem, Froggy, is a fiction narrative that contrasts life by the pond with fairy tales of a prince under a spell in the form of a frog. Rhyming was used when possible to create a sense of familiar text style and form for young readers.

At one time or another, most children have had experiences with frogs or tadpoles. The second reading for this frogs packet is a nonfiction article called Tadpole to Frog. This common experience with frogs is used as a basis for some of the activities found in this packet. Vocabulary cards for display, for study or for games are also included for your convenience. These vocabulary cards provide an extension to the predator of frogs as well as the prey of frogs.

This frogs packet can be used with younger readers in a variety of ways. The poem and/or the article can be a read-a-loud by the teacher or student teacher with the chosen activities completed in an individual or small group setting. The student’s responses can be dictated. They can also be verbal responses in small/large group discussions.

This frogs packet also features extensive Common Core Math themed frog worksheets to reinforce a variety of skills including addition and subtraction within 20, word problem work, measurement, telling time, fractions, graphing and much more!
