Packet Rationale

Authors write to give information, present a point of view (persuade) or to entertain. This reading comprehension packet engages students in several areas. The article takes a ‘small moment’ from the author’s life and combines it with a narrative informational writing at approximately a third grade reading level. Some of the vocabulary is challenging, but also exposes students to common vocabulary found in the study of science.

Tadpole to Frog is a nonfiction narrative with an intuitive persuasive ending. Froggy, Beware! is a poem about the subject to further enhance the student’s exposure to information embedded in a different style of writing.

Tadpole to Frog presents an opportunity for instruction in the characteristics of nonfiction such as title, author, headings, and vocabulary with embedded definitions. The current trend is to encourage students to read at least 50% nonfiction. Seemingly, most difficult for students is the interpretation of writing in a poetic form. Students get exposure to and opportunities to respond to all these forms of writing in this packet.

In addition, comprehension is enhanced in the form of word work in the crossword, word search, and fill in the blank exercises. The multiple choice practice may act as an assessment if needed. The writing prompts suggested are based upon common background knowledge and experiences of the students. There is a graphic for a life cycle illustration that could easily lead into a science lesson.
