Description

Another Friday Math lesson for hands-on learning across several Common Core Standards . . . at least 22 standards from 2nd to 6th grade: multiplication, division, decimals, area, geometry arrays, expressing ratios, public speaking and listening, and more!

In this lesson, students apply math skills to determine the number of pennies required to tile a kitchen floor. They’ll make strong hands-on, visual-mathematic connections for area and multiplication as they tackle this real-life DYI dilemma. Which costs less—a penny tile DIY project or ceramic tile for the kitchen? Teachers can adjust the difficulty of this lesson by removing some of the manipulatives or student activity sheets—depending on the skill level of their students.

You get all the instructions you’ll need for this investigative story problem, suggestion of how to adapt the activity to different skill levels, ready-to-print activity sheets which guide the students’ investigation, answer keys, extension ideas, and a reference list of Common Core Standards in mathematics as well as public speaking.

I recommend this lesson for GATE 3rd or 4th grade through regular or advanced 5th and 6th grade math.
