Description

In this lesson, we take goofing off to a new level. Imagine playing paper football as an assignment . . . this might take all the fun out of it forever!

This lesson is perfect for a Friday, for after a big test, for a test review, or as a center. It only takes about an hour and keeps kids engaged and thinking.

You will find three levels of challenge to meet the needs of a diverse group of learners make this set of lessons highly adaptable, and alignment to the Common Core Math Standards threatens to ruin students’ lives.

But, hey . . . it’s paper football! Come on . . . how bad can it be?

Plus, we have a bonus art and design extension for those quick workers and famous doodlers, so we make this a bit of a cross-curricular and creative challenge as well.
The paper football games are sorted in this way:

Level One – GATE 3rd grade and whole group 4th grade: Equivalent Fractions. Multiplication of Fractions by Whole Numbers. Two-digit by Two-Digit Multiplication. Division with Whole Number Quotients and Remainders. Word Problems.

Level Two – GATE 4th grade and whole group 5th grade: Decimals and Percentages. Change Fractions to decimals. Round to the Nearest Hundredth. Convert Decimals to Percentages. In a class activity, students will establish a class mean (with as much teacher help as you prefer to give), make comparisons and predictions, and learn about probability in the process.

Level Three – GATE 5th grade and whole group 6th grade: Ratios and Proportions. Solve Proportion Word Problems. Think about Probability. Make Predictions Based on Probability.

Bonus Challenge: Goal Post Area is presented at two levels of challenge. How do we use the formula for calculating the area of a trapezoid and apply that calculation to a multi-step problem?

All you have to do is download this lesson, fold up a paper football, review the rules, print out the activity sheets, and you’re on our way to the Super Bowl!

Time: About an hour, and add about 30 minutes for the bonus challenge.

Materials: Common classroom items.

Level: GATE 3rd through whole group 6th grade.
