    Description

Plan a French Winter Sports and Activities vocabulary unit (Les Activités d’Hiver), with a 100-slide interactive presentation, flashcards, worksheets, puzzles, printable games and activities, where students will ask and answer questions such as “Qu’est-ce que tu aimes faire en hiver?”. There are resources for multiple lessons to teach and review vocabulary and phrases through speaking, reading and writing activities, and there's differentiation too. My French basics resources suit students beginning French and near beginners in Primary / Elementary and Middle School (Grade 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8), Core French / FSL etc, and may suit others, depending on experience. Please check the previews to see a sample of the resources. All resources are in PDF, apart from the presentation, which is a PowerPoint (but it is also included in PDF).

This bundle contains the following individual packets, which can be purchased separately if you prefer:

French Winter Activities Presentation and Flashcards

French Winter Activities Worksheets and Puzzles

    French Winter Activities Games

You can also buy these resources as part of a larger French Summer and Winter Activities 7-packet BUNDLE, which includes similar resources for French summer vacation activities, plus French Summer and Winter Reading Comprehensions.

OR SAVE TIME WITH THIS French Seasons and Celebrations MEGA BUNDLE, which includes resources for Christmas, Winter, Summer, Halloween, and Fall / Autumn, with Spring resources to be added in future.

The resources focus on 18 key winter time activities (indoors and outdoors): boire du chocolat chaud, faire des anges de neige, faire des bonhommes de neige, faire du curling, faire de la luge, faire du patin à glace, faire de la pâtisserie, faire de la planche à neige, faire des promenades, faire du ski, jouer au hockey sur glace, jouer dans la neige, lancer des boules de neige, manger de la soupe, prendre des bains chauds, regarder des flms, regarder les étoiles, rester au chaud. Students learn and review the ‘j’aime + infinitive’ sentence construction, the ‘je vais + infinitive’ or near future tense construction, and also the present tense version (je fais du ski etc). Some winter weather phrases and items of winter clothing are briefly reviewed in the presentation too.

    PRESENTATION AND FLASHCARDS

The 100 slides introduce and review key vocabulary and phrases, and include basic reading comprehension tasks, speaking activities and games (the final 40 slides form a memory game). Many slides in the original PowerPoint version feature answers that appear when you click, for students to respond. An additional PDF version is included. While the PDF version does not retain the ability for teachers to reveal answers by clicking, it will still help you introduce and review this topic if you do not have PowerPoint where you work. Please note that the interactive Hexagons game is not compatible with PDF and is therefore omitted from that version. Also within the Zip file is a PDF of flash cards, with two on each page, included with and without backgrounds.

    WORKSHEETS

6 worksheets (with additional differentiated versions of 5 of them), including gap-fill exercises, basic comprehension tasks, a crossword puzzle, word search and hidden word puzzle:

    • Vocabulary support: 7 pages of vocabulary support in different versions are also included for display or printing if required. The word mat is included in a ‘J’aime…’ + infinitive, ‘Je vais…’ + infinitive, and a present tense version. All 3 are included with and without a background. There’s also a key question and answer prompt card. Display on screen or print as required. Please note these support pages are also included in the Worksheets packet for this topic. Please note that the same vocabulary support pages are also contained within the Games packet.
    • 3 worksheets (with answer keys), all in one- and two-star versions. The one-star versions are for lower ability, younger or less experienced students.
    • Hidden word puzzle: Students work individually or in pairs or small groups to find errors in French winter activity phrases. When they find one, they circle the letter printed in the same box. At the end they rearrange the circled letters to find a linked word. Answer key included.
    • Word search puzzle: Students complete the French phrases and find those words in the puzzle (without accents). An easier, one-star version gives students the initial letters of each one. An extra challenge at the end has students put the unused letters together to make a phrase. Answer key included.
    • Crossword puzzle: The clues involve students completing French phrases. An easier, one-star version gives students the initial letters of each word that they need to write into the grid (without accents). Answer key included.

    GAMES AND ACTIVITIES

    • Four in a Row: 2 different game boards. Print and laminate. Works well in 11 x 17 (A3) for larger groups but Letter size (A4) is good too. First to get four in a row - vertically, horizontally or diagonally - wins. Students roll dice, then choose an activity phrase from that number column and say it in French. If correct, use a dry-wipe marker to put a symbol or initial in that box (opponents could use a different colour dry-wipe marker)
    • "Qu'est-ce que tu aimes en hiver?" Card Game: There are 36 game cards (18 identical pairs). Students are given a card each and must move around the room, trying to find the player with the matching card by asking and answering in French. There are 4 versions – using ‘aimer’ and using ‘aller’ for the near future and both of these are included in English and French. You could use the versions in French to support less experienced or lower ability learners.
    • "I Have...Who Has?": Print and laminate the 18 cards, which form a continuous loop so you can start with any of them. Distribute among players. First player reads aloud the ‘Qui aime…?’ (‘Who likes?’) side of their card, stating the activity under the picture in English. The other players check if they have the matching French sentence. If they do, they will read out both sides of their card, and so on. There is an additional version without the 'like' element.
    • Bingo / Tic Tac Toe: 16 different cards for a group game of Bingo in pairs (the teacher or a student could read out French winter activity phrases) or use for Tic Tac Toe / Noughts and Crosses, with students taking it in turns to say aloud a phrase from their card. If cards are laminated, students could write on them with a dry-wipe marker.
    • Human Bingo: Print the page for each student playing the game or play in pairs. Students move around the room asking each other questions about what they like to do in the winter, and write names in relevant boxes. See instructions on the page. A version with images supports less experienced or lower ability learners.

Although the resources have colour on most pages, they work fine if you print them black and white. The photos on the human bingo page are deliberately a little fainter for more eco-printing.
