These activities introduce and reinforce a range of phrases for orientation in town (such as continuez tout droit, tournez à droite, prenez la première / deuxième / troisième rue à gauche / droite, and using prepositions of location such as à côté de and en face de etc.). It includes some vocabulary for key buildings and stores in French, but you may also be interested in these related resources, which cover these two latter areas in more detail:

    PRESENTATION AND FLASHCARDS:

In addition to introducing key vocabulary and phrases, this presentation includes:

    • Sentence translation activities
    • Role-play activities
    • Giving directions using maps
    • True or false map activities
    • 2 rounds of an interactive Hexagons Game (where teams compete to translate vocab and phrases and make a path through the grid)
    • 8 rounds of an interactive Discover the Sentence Game
    • 20 rounds of an interactive multiple choice quiz.

Please note that most of the text in the PowerPoint is editable, however the images are not. Many slides in the original PowerPoint version feature answers that appear when you click, for students to respond. An additional PDF version is included. While the PDF version does not retain the ability for teachers to reveal answers by clicking, it will still help you introduce and review this topic if you do not have PowerPoint where you work. Please note that the Hexagons and Discover the Sentence games are not compatible with PDF and are therefore omitted from that version. The multiple choice quiz is included in the PDF (without the interactivity), as it is still useable in this format.

Also within the Zip file is a PDF of flash cards for the following words and phrases: continuez tout droit, tournez à gauche, tournez à droite, allez tout droit, allez à gauche, allez à droite, la carte, les feux de circulation, le pont, la rivière, le parking, le rond-point, le carrefour, le chemin de fer, le passage piéton, la boîte aux lettres, l'arrêt de bus, le lac, le parc, la rue, l'autoroute, les directions en ville. Many other phrases are covered in the presentation.

    WORKSHEETS AND PUZZLES:

    • WORKSHEETS: 10 differentiated worksheets. Includes gap-fill tasks, translation pages, using maps / street plans, drawing activities and reading comprehension. Choose the pages that suit your students best.
    • PUZZLES: There is a hidden word puzzle and crossword puzzle. The crossword puzzle is differentiated, with the 1-star version providing a little more support.
    • KEY VOCABULARY: Vocabulary support pages to display or print for students that require it. There's a French-English and English-French list of the places in town (buildings and stores) that feature in these activities, a further three pages list other vocabulary and phrases specific to the topic, and there's a word mat of key questions and phrases. Please note that these support pages also appear in the role-play cards packet and printable games packet but are only counted once in the bundle page count.

    PRINTABLE GAMES AND ACTIVITIES:

    • Four in a Row Game: Reviews prepositions (près, à côté de, en face de, derrière, devant, and entre) in connection with key places in town. Print and laminate for repeated use. First to get four in a row - vertically, horizontally or diagonally - wins. Dice required.
    • J’ai…Qui a…?” Loop Game: Print and laminate for repeated use. The cards form a continuous 36-card loop. A speaking game for the whole class, groups, or pairs to review a variety of French direction phrases.
    • Donnez Les Directions! Board Game: 3 game boards and 3 pages of image cards (with and without French text for differentiation if needed). Students take a "starting point and destination card" and guide their teammates in French through the streets, avoiding the barriers. If their teammates correctly guess the destination on the card, they score a point. Print and laminate for continued use. An example journey page is supplied to support students if needed.
    • Dessinez La Destination! Listening Activity: Teacher issues students with street grid on paper and reads directions from a card, for students to draw in the destinations. 4 street grids / instruction cards provided with 5 journeys on each. Answer keys supplied.

    ROLE-PLAY CARDS:

A set of 24 translation cards for oral practice of short conversations involving asking for and giving directions in town. In pairs, students translate the text on their card into French and speak it together. Or they could read the French and translate it into English. The 6 English language sides are designed to be printed back-to-back with the 6 translation sides for student self-checking. If you prefer, translations could be printed as separate cards. Laminate them if you want them to last, and cut them.
