How to use this Free Verse Poetry Writing Workshop:
This poetry writing workshop is perfect for upper middle school and junior high school students! Free verse poetry is a wonderful way to encourage creative expression and relate poetry to popular culture and students’ personal interests.
You can begin this free verse writing workshop with the multimedia slideshow lesson. This lesson will activate background knowledge and recall essential terminology for understanding free verse poetry. The slideshow provides a comprehensive definition of the term "free verse," along with hyperlinks for web pages that explore a range of diverse, modern poets who employ free verse style.
The slideshow requires access to the internet and specifically explores Instagram poets; if your district does not allow access to Instagram or you wish to avoid social media platforms, you can still use the web links to explore poets featured on the Poetry Foundation website.
This poetry writing workshop also includes an informational handout and instructions for an assignment that will have students write their own free verse poem. There are three different options for this assignment:
- Students can model the process demonstrated in the slideshow lesson and create an erasure poem or "blackout poem"
- They can also write a free verse poem and draw an accompanying illustration in the style of Instagram poets like Rupi Kaur
- They can alternatively create a collage poem using newspaper or magazine pages
Each option includes assignment instructions and a student example to model expectations.
This resource also includes over 20 pages for blackout poems pulled from classic literature in the public domain; students can select one of these to use for an erasure poem.
A 4-level poetry rubric for this assignment has also been provided. You may wish to change this rubric to include your own spin on this assignment (like having students complete all three poems or orate to the class); in order to do so, simply make a copy of the editable rubric to your Google Drive®. A ready-to-print poetry rubric has also been provided.

Used for blended learning (online and in-class). The slideshow was a great introduction to the relevance of free verse poetry to my students' lives and this made for really great quality work with their poetry assignments.
