What educators are saying

My students really enjoyed this activity! It got them out of their seats and collaborating with peers.
Some of the images/openings were a little too "dark" (in my opinion), so I just took them out. Overall, this was a fun and engaging way to keep kids moving around the room while generating ideas for writing and discussion.

Description

Decorate your classroom for spooky season AND teach your students how to write engaging narrative hooks! This poster set includes the "freaky first lines" of 25 YA books AND an engaging gallery walk activity. These horrifying, strange, and spooky hooks will show students different strategies for writing intriguing hooks to reel readers in.

During the included gallery walk activity, students will observe the hooks around the room and keep track of the different types of hooks they notice. They will also have fun "nominating" different hooks for various categories (most engaging, most suspenseful, strongest sensory details, etc.) and justifying their answers. After the gallery walk, you will be able to have a rich discussion over different hook strategies, which hooks resonate more with your students, and why authors may choose specific types of hooks with their purpose in mind.

The next time students are writing a hook, they can glance up at the posters for instant ideas & inspiration!
