Description
In this hands-on math experience, students will use their knowledge of division to discover patterns in the decimal equivalents of fractions. Students will divide to find the decimal equivalent of multiple fractions with the same denominator. From that information, students will use inductive reasoning to determine when the decimal equivalent results in an integer, a repeating decimal, or a terminating decimal. They will also describe the pattern in decimal equivalents.
This experience serves as a strong review of fractions as a stepping stone towards working with rational numbers in general. Students can complete the lab in 20 to 30 minutes, depending on division proficiency.
