Description

Fraction Approximation is an dual activity. First students sort the fractions based on whether they are closer to 0, 1/2, or 1 whole. Then after students have brainstormed their ideas, as a class they start putting their fractions on a number line.

Halves, Thirds, Fourths, Fifths, Sixths, Eights, Tenths and Twelfths have been provided Promote math talk by asking questions about how they know the placement and how they can defend their answer. If numbers are really close and students are struggling, suggest that they use a hands-on method such as fraction towers, or fraction circles for a more concrete understanding of the size.

For a more permanent number line, use a large piece of bulletin board paper to glue the finished product to.

Activity includes:

~Fractions (each different denominator on it's own sheet so you can easily print them on different colors)

~A sort page

~the numbers 0, 1/2, and 1 for your classroom number line
