Description

Using a Forest Animal Flashcard matching game <Shinkei Suijaku> for ESL JSL students new to learning English and/or Japanese is a valuable way to aid communication especially for new students who are still not comfortable with speaking the language(s).

1. 10 forest animal flashcards x2 for each target alphabet/syllabary:

English 英語, Romaji ローマ字, Hiragana ひらがな

2. Total 60 flashcards with green back pages for ease of double-sided printing

3. 1 option for rounded corners, 1 option for square corners

- After physically creating the rounded corners, I realized that it will be quicker for teachers with office paper cutters to create their own stack of cards with the square corners version which is why both versions are offered.

4. 40 total printable pages (including back pages)

Teacher Tips

1. Laminate the flashcards for durability. *If Lamination is not an option, I suggest printing the cards onto construction paper for durability.

2. The cards can be used for classroom decoration, this way the review of the vocabulary can naturally be had throughout the year.

3. The flashcards can also be used as a vocabulary cards for Focus Walls.

4. To add a physical activity to the visual flash cards, I would suggest connecting an action to each animal:

i.e. “Weasels like to escape, please catch your right Mommy (pointer) finger with your left hand. Then have it slip out. Ready go!” follow up with a reinforcement question, “What (animal) likes to escape?” Students reply, “Weasels!”

5. To increase memorization of each animal, especially with second language learners, connecting a dedicated hand gesture to each animal vocabulary;

i.e. Boars have tusks. Have one pointer finger each positioned at the edge of your mouth as if you have tusks. If you’re comfortable enough being a bit silly, you can add some fun to the gesture by adding in a boar snort to it.
