What educators are saying

My students loved this assignment! They were very engaged creating their mini posters, and were very excited to tell me about the interesting food webs they researched.
This resource saved me so much work. I wanted my students to create a food web poster, and this resource was easy to implement and follow.

Description

Not just a food web poster - there's much more to this activity! Students create a poster that illustrates AND ANALYZES a food web of their own creation. Supports NGSS MS-LS2-3 and MS-LS2-4.

Students must include 10 organisms in the food web, 2 additional decomposers, the sun, a corresponding energy pyramid and answers to analysis questions. The analysis section includes questions about the particular importance of producers and decomposers and the effect of abiotic factors and the removal/addition of organisms on their food web. A student-friendly, easy-to-read and clear rubric is included. Use this as a take-home assignment or as a classroom activity.

NGSSMS-LS2-3
Develop a model to describe the cycling of matter and flow of energy among living and nonliving parts of an ecosystem. Emphasis is on describing the conservation of matter and flow of energy into and out of various ecosystems, and on defining the boundaries of the system. Assessment does not include the use of chemical reactions to describe the processes.
NGSSMS-LS2-4
Construct an argument supported by empirical evidence that changes to physical or biological components of an ecosystem affect populations. Emphasis is on recognizing patterns in data and making warranted inferences about changes in populations, and on evaluating empirical evidence supporting arguments about changes to ecosystems.
