Description

Food Truck Project may be used alternately as an independent study, for small groups, or engage the entire class in a cross-curricular simulation. All instructions are written so that students working independently may take direction on their own with minimal teacher support. Teacher notes are provided to support teachers in guiding students when needed.

The Food Truck Project is presented as a series of sub-units, best used in the order they appear, but adjustable to time available by selectively skipping some parts. The project is standards-aligned to 5th grade as a central point, but similar standards can be located 4th through 8th grade. Teachers may have to make slight adjustments for the younger grades; however, this unit is designed using Universal Design concepts so that all learners may enjoy success depending upon their skill level—from emerging skills to gifted and talented, from students who express themselves best through nonverbal opportunities to students adept at writing, reading, and logical sequencing.

Formative assessments appear in the form of products and exit tickets, and the simulations and large product showcases serve as summative assessments.

The entire project will take approximately 11-18 hours of class time to complete and represents a full semester of one hour pullouts, once per week.

Make a line plot to display a data set of measurements in fractions of a unit (1/2, 1/4, 1/8). Use operations on fractions for this grade to solve problems involving information presented in line plots. For example, given different measurements of liquid in identical beakers, find the amount of liquid each beaker would contain if the total amount in all the beakers were redistributed equally.
Quote accurately from a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text.
NGSS3-5-ETS1-3
Plan and carry out fair tests in which variables are controlled and failure points are considered to identify aspects of a model or prototype that can be improved.
NGSS3-PS2-2
Make observations and/or measurements of an object’s motion to provide evidence that a pattern can be used to predict future motion. Examples of motion with a predictable pattern could include a child swinging in a swing, a ball rolling back and forth in a bowl, and two children on a see-saw. Assessment does not include technical terms such as period and frequency.
