What educators are saying

This project worked perfectly with what I was teaching my students. There were multiple options that fit different grade levels. If there was a page with step by steps as well as a rubric, this resource would be perfect.

Description

****MAJOR UPDATE*****
Revised file uploaded on 12/1/2014...this is almost double the size of the previous file, so please update your copy! Content index appears below.

Color, cut, and glue these little "present" flap books to review place value and decimal patterns when multiplying or dividing by powers of 10. On each sheet students solve nine problems and write descriptions of the patterns they observe. (The goal for my students was to focus on patterns and relationships.) Blank versions are also included for teachers or students who want to use their own numbers.

Add the completed flap books to your own math notebooks, if desired. Please download the Preview to see a sample.

Use in a Math Station or send home for a creative homework assignment. It could also be used as an assessment--what have students learned about patterns of multiplying and dividing by 10?

Includes:
Set A:
0.001 x ___ (fill in blank with your choice of second factor), moving through each place value (0.01, 0.1, etc...) until you reach 100,000 x ___
Set B:
Same as Set A except the second factor (2) has been chosen for you. 0.001 x 2 through 100,000 x 2
Set C:
0.005 x 10 (10 is constant, the values in the first factor increase by powers of ten) through 500,000 x 10
Set D:
Like Set A, but with division; you choose the divisor.
Set E:
Like Set B, but with division; the divisor is "2."
Set F:
Like Set C, but using division.
Set G:
Blank set with multiplication.
Set H:
Blank set with division.
Extra:
Includes a blank page 2 to use with any set.
An answer key is included.

to see state-specific standards (only available in the US).
Recognize that in a multi-digit number, a digit in one place represents 10 times as much as it represents in the place to its right and 1/10 of what it represents in the place to its left.
Explain patterns in the number of zeros of the product when multiplying a number by powers of 10, and explain patterns in the placement of the decimal point when a decimal is multiplied or divided by a power of 10. Use whole-number exponents to denote powers of 10.
