First Grade Social Studies Plans 2 Week Unit Family, Choices, Needs and Wants

Here is a 10-page, 2-week unit for first grade that can easily be adapted for K or 2nd.

Included are lessons on the following topics:
• Similarities and differences in families (including traditions and cultures)
• Comparing school rules and parent rules and recognizing the importance of rules
• Family traditions and holidays
• Responsibilities and why it is important to work together as a community
• The family tree
• How decisions may affect others whether we mean them to or not
• How to make smart choices
• Good character traits molds great community leaders
• The difference between needs and wants
• Making choices based on the scarcity of time or money.

There is a complete book list (every book can be found at the GA public library, so I am sure they are accessible at other state libraries as well) and each have Lexiles or GEs if available.
Each daily plan has an introduction, read-aloud, technology connection (using United Streaming - you must have an account to use this feature), an activity, and a closing.

Also included are all worksheets created to accompany lessons. There is also a link for an extra activity to complete with students about making good choices. Essential Questions and Enduring Understandings are highlighted at the top of the week.
There is also a family project described in the plans to be completed at home and shared at school to connect learning between home and school. It is designed to introduce basic themes to be focused on during the remainder of the year.
