Description
While it may seem straight forward, central messages or themes can be a very difficult concept for students- especially when asked to explain how they know. This packet was created to help students retell stories to identify the central message (moral) of the story.
Central Messages/Themes Included:
1. Work together (cooperation)
2. Be brave (you don't need to be scared)
3. Try new things
4. If you make a mistake, be honest (everyone makes mistakes and it's okay)
5. Give to others (help animals/generosity)
6. Work hard and you can do it
7. Be yourself (it's okay to be different)
8. Listen to your parents
9. Work before you play (Do not be lazy)
10. Don't steal
This is a quick and easy to use activity packet for finding the central message in a text. This can be used for small groups, for fluency and comprehension practice, intervention or remediation groups, independent work for early finishers, homework and/or whole group lessons on referring to the text. All of the stories have a 200 – 400 Lexile (equivalent to somewhere between a Level F - Level J) reading level which is the grade level expectation for first grade.
There are 10 task cards that fit 4 to a page. Use these task cards as a “scoot” game or tape the task cards to the wall to “read the room.” Have your students record the central messages in their journals. I have also included the 10 central messages that I associate with the 10 stories on their own task cards. Have the students match the story to the central message. Lastly, I have included a blank task card template for you to write in your own central messages if you have one that you think better fits a certain story!
The same stories are also available 2 to a page. These organizers call for students to identify the central message (theme) and then write how they know- explaining their reasoning from evidence in the story. A second organizer asks students to identify the central message and make a connection to their own life.
To summarize what is included in this packet:
10 task cards
10 central message/theme cards
1 blank template
10 passages that ask for the central message & evidence from the text
