Description

Long-term Stock Market Team Project so students may apply the learning from your Investing Unit.

Designed to lead your students to collaborate effectively in deciding on stocks in which to invest to create a thoughtful portfolio predicted to earn future gains. A detailed student outline and checklist will help guide your student groups to completion. Students will be asked to apply learning from a unit in investing and stocks. Students will be required to explain why they believe their portfolio is a smart investment. Preliminary and subsequent lessons that build on the topic and challenge the learner can be found here - Investing Bundle - The BUNDLE link provides a 20% discount.

If your students have NOT YET learned to look up financial data on companies as it relates to investing, consider using the below resources first:

  1. Start with this resource for clear understanding of what stocks are and why they exist. How do people make money owning stocks? https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Stocks-IPOs-and-Markets-Simplified-Financial-Literacy-Investing-6777118
  2. Teach your student where to find the information online for a variety of companies with the use of a brief visual presentation and student activity to cement the learning. https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Financial-Lit-Investing-Reading-Stock-Charts-Presentation-Internet-Activity-4084873
  3. Students will apply learning to this spreadsheet activity and engage in analysis. https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Financial-Literacy-Investing-Capital-Gain-Loss-Stock-Portfolio-Activity-4085174

This project has been successful for a range of learning abilities, including ELL. Students find the assignment fun as well as competitive. It is ideal as a culminating assignment at the end of an Investing Unit. This tried and tested resource is set up to make your life easier implementing a long-term project for your students with plenty of scaffolding.

SWBAT engage with financial websites to research publicly traded companies; analyze company data and explain why they would choose to invest in a company through the purchase of shares of stock; construct and defend a stock portfolio; model a real-world situation by using information and mathematical data on companies to build a stock portfolio; present as a group to the class upon conclusion of the project.

This resource includes:

  • slide presentation to intro the project (teacher slide notes help guide you)
  • two spreadsheet templates- Excel and/or Google Sheets ( a historical look at companies and projections for future)
  • a step-by-step outline to break down the project into manageable chunks
  • a detailed grading rubric for the teacher
  • a reflective writing assignment after all group presentations so students cement learning.

According to my previous students, this is a memorable project that they reflect fondly on. They have a lot of fun with it while learning a valuable life-skill of understanding investing in stocks.
