PROJECT 1: Index, Exchange & Commodity Research (approximately 1 week) - Students research different topics and present findings to each other:
- stock exchange (NYSE, Nasdaq and American Stock Exchange)
- stock index (Dow Jones, S&P 500, Nasdaq Composite, Russell 2000)
- commodities
PROJECT 2: Public Company Investigation (approximately 1 week) - Students research a publicly traded company and present findings about:
- company history and product offerings
- CEO letter to shareholders
- stock profile overview
- basic financial information about revenue and growth
PROJECT 3: Investment Firm Presentation (approximately 1-2 weeks) - Students research one of the top investment firms to explore the field of finance and present findings about:
- Company Overview
- Assets Under Management (AUM)
- Financial Products & Services
- Client Profile
PROJECT 4: IPO Exploration (approximately 1 week) - Students utilize linked sources to learn about the what, why, how, and when of initial public offerings and choose an IPO to explore and present findings about:
- company background & product offering overview
- company's S-1 filing for risk analysis, M&A's highlights including revenue and growth
PROJECT 5: 10K & Financial Statement Analysis (approximately 5 - 7 hours) - Students investigate a publicly traded company's annual report or 10K including the letter to shareholders and financial statements (income statement, balance sheet, and statement of cash flow). Students calculate financial ratios including return on sales, gross profit margin, return on equity, current ratio, and debt-to-equity ratio. Students design a presentation to share finding with the class.
Assignments 1 - 2: Two Versions of the Current News Review Graphic Organizer (approximately 1 hour each): one focuses on any publicly traded company (or related) business news and the other on BAD business news only.
- Company stock info (ticker, price day of article, price day after article)
- Summarizing the news story (main topic and supporting ideas)
- Current and future impact on the company
- Impact on other companies / industries
Assignment 3: Bear vs Bull Market Graphic Organizer (approximately 35 - 45 minutes): students read a linked online article to learn about bear and bull markets, economic / stock market characteristics of each, how investors typically react, and interpret a chart of bear market historical data
Assignment 4: Professional Email with Stock Recommendations (approximately 1 hour): students research two publicly traded companies' stock profile and current news about the companies, and write a professional email making investment recommendations and include share price, day range, 52-week range, beta, and PE ratio.
