Learning Objective

Given a sentence containing figurative language, students will select the literary device used from a list of multiple choice options. Given a literary device, students will select the sentence that contains the device.

Description

Figurative Language Task Cards: This set of 42 task cards will give your upper elementary students an opportunity to practice reading a sentence and identifying the type of figurative language used by the writer. Students will differentiate between seven literary devices: similes, metaphors, alliteration, personification, onomatopoeias, hyperboles, and idioms. Each task card consists of a question and four multiple-choice options.

The task cards follow two different formats:

  1. For the first 24 task cards, a sentence containing figurative language is in the question stem, and students must determine which of the four literary devices listed is used within that sentence.
  2. For the remaining 18 task cards, students are asked, "Which sentence contains a (metaphor)?" Then, students must read through each sentence and select the one that includes the given literary device.

As students complete these 42 task cards, they will gain proficiency and confidence in their ability to identify figurative language in context.

A recording sheet and answer key are included. Like most of my task card sets, the resource contains a bonus game-like answer sheet in addition to the more traditional recording sheet. Many teachers report posting the task cards around the room to give their students a chance to get up and walk around. Others say that they use these as a whole class formative activity where they place a task card under their doc cam, and then have students write their chosen answer on whiteboards. Both activities provide an engaging alternative to a traditional worksheet activity!

********This resource is available in three formats:

  1. Traditional Printables- Print the PDF and distribute paper task cards and recording sheets.
  2. Easel Activity- With this digital format, there is one task card per slide. Students can complete this activity on a device. Students read each question and select an answer. This has a multiple-choice format, and students push the button that displays the correct answer. No checking is necessary! When your students turn it in, you will see their score and the number of attempts they made on each card.
  3. Easel Assessment- Students complete this self-grading quiz on a device, as well. After reading each question, students select the correct answer from a list of four possible answer choices. With this option, the teacher chooses whether or not his or her students receive immediate feedback.

Here's what teachers like you had to say about using these task cards with their students:

⭐️ Grow with Me said, "My students enjoyed using this for a task card hunt review before state testing. They were fun sentences and a great review!"

⭐️ Lisa A. said, "One of my favorites! Great for all students. I tape these around the room and students walk around and answer them. Perfect for EL's who are possibly still learning figurative language, since it is a multiple choice answer."

⭐️ Stephanie S. said, "This product was a great way to wrap up our unit on figurative language! It was the perfect review to see what my students know and didn't know."

⭐️ Amber O. said, "My EL students always struggle with figurative language but this resource was great to use. Will be using again and again!"

⭐️ Beth V. said, "After our unit on figurative language the kids broke out into groups to show me what they learned. It was great to hear the discussions of why some thought differently than others. Also, if one student forgot what one figurative language was others explained in his/her group and so they definitely learned and yet became teachers at the same time. Nice resource."
