What educators are saying

As a fifth grade team, we have used set #1 for multiple years. Students enjoy using figurative language in these quick stories, and having more choices with set #2 enables my students to find a story they can connect with & customize.
I have used this for the last 3 years in my class. It is a really great resource. I like that they are digital.

Description

I created these stories and activities to further challenge my students in comprehending, identifying, analyzing, and revising figurative language. The stories in this set are meant to be longer and slightly more complex than the stories in my original Figurative Language Stories set, shown on the right. The average length for each story in the first set is 150 words, while the paragraphs in Set 2 average 300 words.

This pack includes 6 original, all new reading passages for teaching and reviewing figurative language: simile, metaphor, hyperbole, personification, alliteration, onomatopoeia, idiom, and allusion.

These activities are perfect for weekly homework, daily/bell work, classwork, review, test prep, or assessment.

Each of the 6 passages includes 4 activities.
Task A: Identify Figurative Language - Read the story and annotate (highlight or underline and label) figurative language; includes a checklist of what students should find. There are between 11-18 instances of figurative language in each passage.
Task B: Analyze Figurative Language - Students answer higher-order thinking questions based on the figurative language used in the story.
Task C: Modify Figurative Language - Students choose 5 instances of figurative language from the story and modify them so that figurative language still keeps its basic original meaning.
Task D: Revise Figurative Language - Students revise the paragraph based on the changes they made in Task C.
