What educators are saying

Students loved this activity! They are enjoying learning figurative language and like it when I use one of these in a center.
As a fourth-grade teacher navigating the ever-evolving landscape of English Language Arts (ELA) instruction, finding a resource that seamlessly combines educational rigor with student engagement is akin to discovering a hidden treasure.

    Description

Do your students need to practice identifying different types of figurative language? Your students will review the four main types of figurative language: similes, metaphors, hyperboles, and personification with these seasonal and holiday-themed sorting activities which last all school year long!

About the Figurative Language Sorting Activity

The students will sort sentences or definitions into groups based on what figurative language (similes, metaphors, personification, and hyperbole) is being described or used in the sentence.

Example Figurative Language Sentences from the Fall set:

    • The squirrels frantically gathered nuts like shoppers on Black Friday.
    • I was an icicle until Regina handed me the mug of hot apple cider.
    • Uma picked enough cranberries to make a hundred barrels of sauce.
    • With a shove from the wind, the apple excitedly leapt from the tree.

Each resource is available in color and black and white. The black and white versions would allow you to have the students cut and glue to create a themed craftivity.

How can you use these activities?

    • ELA Center
    • RTI Center
    • Workstation Activity
    • Craftivity
    • Activity for Early Finishers

    About the Digital Sorting Activity

There is also a digital version of each sort, which includes the same sentences as the printable version.

Refer to the printable answer key to check your students' answers.

You can find the digital access links in each PDF.

    Bundle-Only Bonus!

A video game-themed bonus sort is included if you purchase the bundle. Check out the preview for a sneak peek!
