Description
This PowerPoint presentation clearly and concisely introduces students to the concept of Figurative Language. You can use it to introduce or review. It compares figurative language to literal language, using photography to illustrate the difference between literal and figurative language. It covers the five types of figurative language: personification, metaphor, simile, idiom, and hyperbole. It finishes with a review quiz to test students' comprehension.
I made this PowerPoint because my high school students had a hard time expressing the difference between literal language and figurative language (a question that actually comes up on standardized tests quite often). To understand what figurative language is, it was necessary to teach them the definition of literal language, and show examples of both.
This presentation is simple enough for grade school, but essential enough to be suitable for high school, especially when they need a review of figurative language.
The presentation is designed with note-taking in mind. Slides that are meant to be copied have a pencil image in the bottom right corner.
Two quizzes are built into the presentation, to check for understanding along the way.
I recommend following this presentation with with my Figurative Language Guided Worksheets Resource, twelve pages of guided practice defining, identifying, applying, and creating figurative language.
Together, the presentation and the worksheet require 50-60 minutes of class time.
