What educators are saying

The figurative language tasting activity is my all-time favorite way to teach these concepts to my kids. They loved it.
This resource provided engaging activities to teach students about figurative language. It's been a great addition to our Creative Writing program. The scavenger hunt was really fun.

    Description

Teaching figurative language as part of a poetry unit or Creative Writing class? Want to review figurative language techniques without the boring worksheets or sit-and-get lessons? This bundle of 5 figurative language resources will not only teach your students figurative language terms but engage them in searching through mentor texts, creating their own examples, and using figurative language in their writing!

These resources include a mix of direct instruction, hands-on activities, and writing practice to make sure your students completely understand figurative language!

This resource covers the following figurative language terms:

    • Simile
    • Metaphor
    • Implied Metaphor
    • Personification
    • Hyperbole
    • Allusion
    • Idiom
    • Pun
    • Onomatopeia
    • Alliteration

These terms were chosen based on this article from MasterClass.

This bundle includes the following resources (and I suggest using them in this order):

    1. Figurative Language Scavenger Hunt--This lesson includes an introductory presentation to all 10 figurative language terms covered in this unit. Students will find figurative language techniques in expert writing before they create their own examples. This is a fun way to introduce figurative language skills! Digital version included!
    2. Figurative Language Student Handout--This handout is a great reference for students. It can be given out during the introductory presentation included with the scavenger hunt, after, or even just given to students who are absent and missed the notes. This is a handy reference for all of the included activities.
    3. Figurative Language Tasting Activity--Now that students have a basic understanding of figurative language, they can try creating their own similes, metaphors, hyperboles, and general sensory descriptions doing something they love--snacking on candy!
    4. Figurative Language Task Cards--These are a great review for students before they move on to their final figurative language assessment. Digital version included!
    5. Figurative Language Photo and Setting Writing Activity--This mini-project serves as a great final assessment for figurative language skills. Students will have to not only create figurative language but apply the skills to a writing task. Digital version included!
