Description

This file includes a Fifty by First summer reading challenge packet which can be printed and given to students to complete in the summer between Kindergarten and First Grade. Each of the 50 days includes some words to read, a short reading passage, and a quick math activity focusing on numbers to 20 or counting to 100. Each of the stories is fully decodable and aligns with Abeka's Kindergarten reading skills, but can be used with many other phonics programs as well. Students review digraphs, some special sounds from chart 6, and short and long vowel words each day. Each story is repeated for two days. On the first day, students are given practice words from the story to mark vowels and circle special sounds as a preview before reading the story. On the second day, students practice reading special sounds and sight words as well as re-read the story to increase fluency.

Compose and decompose numbers from 11 to 19 into ten ones and some further ones, e.g., by using objects or drawings, and record each composition or decomposition by a drawing or equation (e.g., 18 = 10 + 8); understand that these numbers are composed of ten ones and one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, or nine ones.
Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.
