Children tend to have favorite colors. These are the colors that they normally gravitate toward (especially when choosing a crayon with which to color a picture). Many adults have favorite colors as well (although there are some who do not favor one color over another). Within each family are those who have similar favorite colors and those who have different favorite colors. Everyone's family is different in that way.

Family and Colors - Family Tree of Favorite Colors Activity helps your students and their families explore their favorite colors as well as their family structure. In this activity, the student asks each member of his/her family what his/her favorite color is and keeps a record of it. With that record, and the templates within the packet to help each one piece together his/her family tree, the student can set up a family tree structure which identifies each member of the family by favorite color, very much like the family tree structures pictured on the cover. The younger students will need help from parent(s), but the older students should be able to do the constructing of the family tree themselves.

The family may only involve parents and children (the student and his/her siblings), but ideally, the student can spread it out to cover grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. Some students may be able to extend beyond grandparents to great-grandparents, and to grandaunts and granduncles. Every family is different, and the trees produced by the students will reflect the uniqueness of each one's family based on favorite color.

The packet includes instructions and templates. The templates cover male and female icons for the student to color in after they have been cut out, and brackets which will help guide the student in setting up families with 1 child up to families with 7 children, with extra brackets to add to existing brackets to handle those families with 8 or more children.

You might be interested in the rhyming book My Grandpa Likes the Color Brown at the end of which I set a family tree based on the story (the same family tree as on the upper left of the cover to this packet). It was designed with preschool and Kindergarten students in mind, but 1st and 2nd Grade students might enjoy the rhymes, too.
