What educators are saying

Students were able to learn about their family roots and later apply this knowledge in various history lessons. Great for an end of the year activity to see how what we have learned connects to their families.

Description

Students enjoy learning about their own PERSONAL HISTORY as they learn the history of people around the world. Personalize learning of your Social Studies curriculum with a look at where your students are from. This quick and engaging Family Heritage project will help them learn how their ancestors (or they) got to the country they currently live in.

Students will:

  • Research the meaning of their name
  • Interview family members
  • Create a family tree
  • Identify the countries and continents they're from
  • Draw those country's flags
  • Create a unique flag combining important family elements

How to use this activity:

  • Use it as a "Get-to-Know-You" activity at the beginning of the year
  • Use this activity with your Social Studies curriculum, especially if you are reading about how people arrived in your country. Students will enjoy learning about their families' roots.
  • Although the intention is to be genealogical, not all students live with their birth parents or know their family histories. Adjust accordingly. It can be fun to learn about anyone's background, especially someone they care about.
  • Turn it into an informational writing piece. Students will be more invested in writing about something they care about.
  • It's a great research-based culminating project for the end of the year
  • Students say this is one of their favorite activities!
