In this highly-engaging resource, students understand the reason for the construction of the Berlin Wall, the history of the wall, why the Berlin Wall was destroyed, and several reasons to explain the collapse of the Soviet Union!

Students begin with a close reading of the Berlin Wall, its history, and why it ultimately was taken down (complete with analytical questions). Then, students use the included graphic organizer to understand key terms related to the Soviet Union and four different reasons to explain why the Soviet Union collapsed. Students emerge understanding the role of Mikhail Gorbachev, the Brezhnev Doctrine, Perestroika (economic restructuring), Glasnost (political openness), Ronald Reagan and the missile defense system known as "Star Wars," stagnation in the Soviet economy, the Eastern Bloc of communist nations, and several inherent problems with communism.
