Description

Thanksgiving Readers' Theater Script & Literacy Toolkit for Grades 3, 4, 5 & 6: "Thanksgiving with Mr. Loony": From chainsaws to teddy bears to potato scavenger hunts, Mr. Loony's ideas for celebrating Thanksgiving are . . . well . . . loony.

This Thanksgiving readers' theater script and the accompanying literacy activities will provide students with plenty of literacy-focused fall fun. The literacy toolkit is perfect for third-grade, fourth-grade, fifth-grade, and sixth-grade students and works for small-group instruction or literacy centers. When it comes time to perform, the script includes opportunities for audience participation, creating an extra-engaging experience. The literacy toolkit includes the following:

>"Thanksgiving with Mr. Loony": 6-page readers' theater script for 5-8 readers

>Sound Effects: Cue Cards

>Vocabulary: Word Work activity

>Cause and Effect graphic organizer activity

>Readers' Theater Weekly Practice Checklist

>An overview of readers' theater & the four elements of fluent reading

>A variety of tips & tricks for successful readers' theater implementation

The script includes sound effects for which students may choose to include audience participation. Cue cards are provided that students can use to cue the audience for a unique, interactive readers' theater performance.

The script also includes a list of “Watch-out words!” This feature highlights challenging words for which students may need help as they practice. These words also make terrific candidates for classroom vocabulary instruction.

If you choose to do script-based vocabulary instruction, the Word Work vocabulary activity included with the script uses four of the “Watch-out words!” for more in-depth vocabulary study. A Sample Answer Key is included.

If you want to strengthen students' reading comprehension skills, you can use the Cause and Effect graphic organizer activity as another extension of the script. A Sample Answer Key is included.

A variety of tips and tricks and a basic overview of readers' theater are also provided, including information on the four essential components of reading fluency—accuracy, rate, phrasing, and expression.
