Description

Mummy-themed Halloween Readers' Theater Script & Literacy Activities: "Mumford's Mummy Problem": When Mumford the Mummy's stink gets too strong, he finds a scented solution from a surprising source.

This readers' theater literacy toolkit makes a terrific addition to any mummy, Egypt, or Halloween unit and is perfect for third-grade, fourth-grade, fifth-grade, and sixth-grade students. It includes the following:

>"Mumford's Mummy Problem": 7-page, 5-reader script

>Sound Effects: Cue Cards

>Vocabulary: Word Work activity

>Comparing with Similes graphic organizer activity

>Foul Facts: Disgusting Stuff That'll Make You Ask for Mummy mummies factsheet

>Nonfiction Books about Mummies leveled booklist

>An overview of readers' theater & the four elements of fluent reading

The script includes sound effects for which students may choose to include audience participation. Cue cards are provided that students can use to cue the audience for a unique, interactive readers' theater performance.

The script also includes a list of “Watch-out words!” This feature highlights challenging words for which students may need help as they practice. These words also make terrific candidates for classroom vocabulary instruction.

If you choose to do script-based vocabulary instruction, the Word Work vocabulary activity included with the script uses four of the “Watch-out words!” for more in-depth vocabulary study. A Sample Answer Key provides a basic, kid-friendly explanation of each word’s meaning, which can be used when actively teaching students the words.

If you want to strengthen students' skills with interpreting and using figurative language, you can use the Comparing with Similes graphic organizer activity as another extension of the script. A Sample Answer Key is included.

With the Foul Facts: Disgusting Stuff That'll Make You Ask for Mummy factsheet, students can learn true (and disgusting!) facts about real, not-so-live mummies.

The Nonfiction Books about Mummies page provides a list of high-interest, leveled books that can be included in literacy stations.

A variety of readers' theater tips and tricks are provided, along with a basic overview of readers' theater, which includes information on the four essential components of reading fluency—accuracy, rate, phrasing, and expression.
