Description

This Quadratic Factoring resource for a > 1 will finally give your kids a method that not only works every time, but has NO GIMMICKS to forget. This method uses factoring by grouping and also called the AC method.

Students have so much trouble with factoring trinomials, especially those whose leading coefficient is not one. I see it all the way up through Calculus. I have seen crazy methods and videos, which act like a Band-Aid: temporarily helping, but students forget these methods since they are not built on common algebraic steps. The X box which is so popular with teachers is so easily forgotten by kids.

The Grouping / AC method works every time, and, if it doesn't work, then the trinomial is prime. It is based upon the FOIL method which kids understand and love. This handout gives 4 step by step guided examples and 13 practice problems. I have had tremendous success and lasting power using this method. It's not new; it's in many books, but here it is in a nice format for your classes.

Use the structure of an expression to identify ways to rewrite it. For example, see 𝘹⁴ – 𝘺⁴ as (𝘹²)² – (𝘺²)², thus recognizing it as a difference of squares that can be factored as (𝘹² – 𝘺²)(𝘹² + 𝘺²).
Choose and produce an equivalent form of an expression to reveal and explain properties of the quantity represented by the expression.
Factor a quadratic expression to reveal the zeros of the function it defines.
