What educators are saying

When taking the FSA my students weren't sure what to expect. Having this FSA game helped students gain an idea of what would be on the assessment and gave them the opportunity to practice before going in for the test.

Description

This is a Jeopardy-like game that is a good way to remind students of the important basics before the FSA Writing test. You can also use it as a review after any writing unit!

The main file is a 31-slide power point file. Basically, the first slide is similar to the Jeopardy screen: 6 categories and 5 questions under each category - with points ranging from 100 to 500. Use your mouse to select a point value square under a category, and you are instantly taken to the corresponding question slide (without leaving presentation mode). Each question slide includes an "answer key" that is activated on a mouse click, and an easy-to-use home button that takes you back to the main category page. Once a question is asked, its square disappears (just like actual Jeopardy!).

Categories include:

  • Determining the audience
  • Interpreting the prompt
  • Crafting thesis statements*
  • Essay organization
  • Conventions
  • Review of the basics**

* Every suggested thesis statement includes colon usage. My awesome reading coach taught us this trick: if there's a correctly used colon in the thesis statement, the readers are more likely to think that the student can used advanced sentence structure ;)

**I teach my students that there are 5 things you need to do in order to earn a passing score - the last question in this category asks students to parrot those things. If you have low writers, I recommend that you send them home with this list to memorize before the test!
