Description

This product was created to complement the Ontario Curriculum Grade 3 Science strand;

STRUCTURES ET MÉCANISMES: LES STRUCTURES SOLIDES ET STABLES*

• Students will identify structures found in the natural environment and in the built environment.

• Interactive pages; students are asked to sort objects into categories (natural or built). Add this activity to a science notebook or use as a stand-alone activity.

• Use the pages that are already organized to stimulate class discussion and add them to science notebooks. They can also serve as answer keys for students to self-check their work.

• 2 pages for students to add their own ideas; one for natural and one for built structures.

• Posters (colour and black & white) for students to replicate, as closely as they can, using construction toys and/or other materials in your classroom. BW versions are great if you want to save your ink or have students add them to their science notebooks!

• Includes the following clip art versions of famous world landmarks and monuments. I like using these because the lines are bold and defined and easier for students to replicate and build↓

La Tour CN - Toronto, Canada

Le Château d'Ashford - Cong, Irlande

L' Inukshuk des Jeux Olympiques 2010 - Whistler, Canada

Les Pyramides de Gizeh - Gizeh, Égypte

La Tour de Pise - Pise, Italie

Le Taj Mahal - Agra, Inde

La Pagode de Negoro-Ji - Iwade, Japon

Le Pont de Londres - Londres, Angleterre

La Tour Eiffel - Paris, France

Chichen Itza - Youcatan, Mexique

L'Opéra de Sydney - Sydney, Australie

L'Église de Borgund - Borgund, Norvège

La Statue de la Liberté - New York, États-Unis

L'Arc de Triomphe - Paris, France

♦ Divide students into small groups and have them recreate the same structure or give each group a different one. Rotate the groups through each structure using different materials each time they build.

♦ Great hands-on activity for science centers throughout the unit and beyond!

♦ Print 2 or more per page and create building cards for your STEM / STIM centers!

• Student recording sheet for summarizing what they have done at each station/center. It can also be used to assess a written and/or oral presentation and for the culminating task.

• The culminating STEM activity asks students to demonstrate their understanding of structures by building either a bridge OR a tower that is as big as possible (within reason) without compromising stability. I often use this as their science fair project assignment.

• Students must demonstrate the stability of the structure by performing a test -- a simulation of an earthquake (shake the foundation of the structure); a hurricane (wind from a fan); a load (add weight).

• They are then asked to present their structure and the results from the test to the class and during the science fair.

- Student cover page is also included (black & white version of product cover)

- Teacher Guide is included (in English)

- Rubric is also included (Expectations and Levels 1 - 4)**

Add your own ideas as well to help students explore and understand structures!

Enjoy!

**Please note that the RUBRIC is written in ENGLISH. This is because if the culminating task/project is done at home, it ensures that the expectations are clear since many parents of students I teach do not read or speak French.**
