What educators are saying

This is such a great resource for reinforcing target sounds - As we are working on a sound, I'll send the related strip home so that students can practice the sound when they're not at school!
This helped my child get the extra practice she needed. She also started to see that words are read using chunks or syllables.

    Description

Do your French primary students struggle with efficiently blending letters and sounds together to read syllables? Do they struggle to "see" les sons composés inside of larger words? Are you looking for more ways to incorporate the Science of Reading in your French primary classroom?

If yes, then this bundle is sure to help! Let's stop encouraging our students to memorize and guess, and instead teach them to REALLY read new words.

The concept of this activity is simple, but I have seen it really make a difference with my students.

This resource contains blending strips for 28 target letters (all letters of the alphabet, plus a second page for Cc & Gg to learn both their hard and soft sounds), plus blending strips for 22 different son composés.

Each strip has its own target letter or sound. Students will find the letter sound within each word or syllable, and then use the sound to help them read the words.

There are two versions of each strip. In the first version, the target sound is coloured, and « les lettres muettes » are grey. Sons composés are underlined. Regular letters that "talk" are black. This format will help your students who are just getting used to French sounds remember to reach each son composé as one sound, and to not pronounce the silent letters.

In the second version, ALL of the letters are black. These strips contain all of the same words and order of words as the coloured strips, but they are trickier as students will have to recognize the sons composés and the silent letters on their own.

You can choose which version is best for your students, depending on their needs and abilities!

I use these sound strips during guided reading, and will often send some strips home in my students' reading bags for extra practice when I teach a new sound. I love being able to differentiate depending on my students’ individual needs!

Alphabet version: Each letter has its own page. Each page contains four blending strips. Some strips include only simple sounds, and some strips include les sons composés. Use whichever strips work best for you and your students!

Son composés version: Most sounds have their own page with four blending strips. Exceptions: The sounds ph, eil, eille and oeu have two strips each. Each of the words for practicing the simplest sounds that you teach first contain ONLY that son composé - no others!

This means that you can teach the sounds to your students in any order that you like, and they will still be able to decode every word on the page (no prior son composés knowledge required).

*There are a couple of words for some of the more complex sounds (ph, oin, ain, eille, ien, eau, gn) that contain more than one sound, but very few! On the coloured cards, I underline those sounds, to remind students to think of those letters as one sound.

Check out the preview above for a closer look.

Each strip also includes a picture clue of an anchor word for each of the target sounds.

Easy prep - just print, laminate, and cut!
