What educators are saying

My students loved using this resource for their morning work. They were engaged in the resource and had no trouble getting started. I didn't have to change a thing.
This resource was the best ever. I used this with my students as an end of the year activity. During the year we don't have a lot of time to teach geography and map skills. This was an engaging way to teach those necessary skills.

Description

It’s geography, critical thinking, following directions, and map-reading skills rolled into one!

Find the Mystery State is a set of 28 Task Cards that can be used for a fun, creative game to help your students review basic map skills and following directions. The Nelson family is headed to a new home somewhere in the United States. But what is their final destination? Your students play detective and try to find the location of the family’s new home by eliminating states one at a time using a map of the United States and the direction clues on Task Cards.

DIRECTIONS

• Students read each Task Card and eliminate one or more states based on the clue.

• They record their answer for each Task Card on the Student’s Answer Sheet by writing the name of the state or states where the Nelsons are NOT headed. If more than one state should be eliminated, the correct number is listed in parentheses.

• Then they look at the Student’s Checklist and find the state or states to be eliminated. The states are listed in alphabetical order. They place an (X) on the line to eliminate the state(s) that is NOT the family’s destination.

• After all 28 Task Cards have been completed, only one state should be left unmarked – their new home!

Also included in this unit:

Directions for Students

a Student’s Answer Sheet

• a Student’s Checklist

• an Answer Key

• an Award Certificate

• a Map of the United States

• directions for playing Scoot

Short on time? No problem!

The Task Cards don’t have to be done all in one sitting. Students can solve

the problems at a social studies or geography center for a set amount of

time. They keep their Student’s Answer Sheet and their Student’s

Checklist in their notebooks when time is up and then just pick up where they left off when they are ready to visit the center again.
