Interactive Notebook Unit for Writing and Evaluating Expressions
An interactive notes unit on Writing and Evaluating Expressions. My interactive notes units are different from other products because they include a self-evaluation component and a writing about math component. Each lesson includes a question that requires a written response from the student. These can be used as formative assessments. I have found in my classroom that students who write about what they are learning in math have a deeper understanding of that math.
Writing and Evaluating Expressions is an essential skill in 5th grade as it is the basis of algebra. This unit includes both simplifying/ evaluating expressions with the order of operations and grouping symbols and writing expressions from both words and phrases. It also includes a lesson on understanding the relationship between expressions.
This unit incorporates Kaplan’s Depth and Complexity Icons critical thinking tools to help your students think more deeply in math.
