Description

We often use words and phrases from Greek Mythology and do not even realize it! Have you ever had a "mercurial" friend or met someone on a "Saturday"? You may have never climbed a "volcano" or caught an "echo" — but these words and phrases derive from mythology. Note: The following educational digital download is compatible with PDF, Google Workspace, and PDF.

How do I use this resource? The following resource can be used as a stand-alone study guide for mythology-based vocabulary with Frayer models. It is also designed as a study guide for Bernard Evslin’s 1966 book of mythology, Heroes, Gods, and Monsters. Also included is a reproducible note-taking template.

Let's dive into a fun vocabulary adventure! Here's what you need to do (and feel free to adapt to your students’ needs):

  1. Print the Illustrated Word List: This is your treasure map for our word hunt. Each page has unique terms and definitions.
  2. Create Your Deck: Cut out the terms and definitions from the printed pages. Mix them up to create a scrambled deck of vocabulary cards.
  3. Distribute the Cards: Pass out the cards to all the students. If we have a smaller class today, students might get more than one card.
  4. Start the Hunt: Now, it's time for the fun part! Each student needs to find the matching pair for their term or definition.
  5. Could you verify the Match? Please bring it to me once a pair is found. I'll check to make sure it's a perfect match! Remember, this is not just a game but a journey through the fascinating world of words. Happy hunting!

Play MythoMatch — a Digital Game!: Use the Easel and Google Workspace student-facing versions to play a digital game called MythoMatch and complete Frayer model cards for all 45 words.

The lesson matrix is also a teacher-facing guide to match the myth-based vocabulary with its appropriate lesson in the Stones of Erasmus mythology series. Use the “Further Reading Guide” to plan mythology-based extension activities or assign a research project.
