Description

**Includes editable book and one already in presentation mode**

If you are looking for an engaging way to teach your students about the types of animals (mammals, reptiles, fish, etc...) that live here on planet Earth, then this is the unit for you.

Exploration of Animals includes a storybook (PowerPoint Presentation) that takes students on a guided tour of a zoo with Jean the Zoologist. Jean takes students around the zoo and discusses the 5 types of animals. She gives information on each type and examples of each, as well as different websites/activities embedded into the slides to learn more about the specific type. This "book" can be spread out across a few days (1 type of animal per day).

During the unit, while reading the storybook, students can do an activity where they ask peers what their favorite type of animal is an create a graph to show their data. They will also do an arts/crafts project for each animal type and list what puts each animal in the category. At the end, students are assigned one of the 5 types of animals, research, and create a presentation on that animal to discuss with their peers.

This unit includes:

Animal Exploration Lesson Plan

Animal Exploration - Big Book Presentation

Animal Research Activity Sheet

Animal Research Rubric

Animals Concept Map

Favorite Type of Animal Poll/Questionnaire

Activities Per Day - Students create an animal based on the type learned (ex. Mammal = Hippo) and lists facts inside/on the craft (Pictures Included and Outlines for each craft)

Lesson Plan

Can be adapted for upper elementary for adaptations in animals.

Organize, represent, and interpret data with up to three categories; ask and answer questions about the total number of data points, how many in each category, and how many more or less are in one category than in another.
Draw a picture graph and a bar graph (with single-unit scale) to represent a data set with up to four categories. Solve simple put-together, take-apart, and compare problems using information presented in a bar graph.
Draw a scaled picture graph and a scaled bar graph to represent a data set with several categories. Solve one- and two-step “how many more” and “how many less” problems using information presented in scaled bar graphs. For example, draw a bar graph in which each square in the bar graph might represent 5 pets.
