Experimental determination of the Empirical Formula of Magnesium Oxide

This laboratory investigation includes an instructional PowerPoint for the exercise. It also includes stimulation for class discussion prior to the exercise, as well as guidance on systematic and random errors in experimental work. There are graphics to assist with relevant laboratory equipment recognition.
This package also includes a guided booklet to assist students with the preparation of their final laboratory report. It uses a standardised approach to reporting and also has a section for risk assessment associated with the experiment.
This exercise assumes that the students will have had instruction on the importance and method of Empirical Formula determination, as well as knowledge of risk assessment in experimental work.
