Description

This set of exercises is designed to help students break down the central argument in the 78-minute Netflix documentary “Minimalism”. These activities make GREAT SUB PLANS!

Google Slides

The entire resource is provided on Google Slides, and all student response spaces are editable. A link to the Slides file is provided in the purchased version.

Active Viewing Guide

This one-page viewing guide will keep students from mentally checking out as they watch the documentary. There are two pre-viewing questions that act as an anticipation guide, and the eight focal questions require students to recall, theorize, and paraphrase. An answer key is provided.

Evidence Collection Forms

This exercise can be used as a replacement for the Active Viewing Guide or a complement to it. There are five arguments for which to collect evidence, and students are to write down facts and expert opinions. One way to use this activity is to differentiate by assigning each student one argument to watch for. After watching the film, the teacher might group the students by argument and have them share the evidence they caught and develop a sentence articulating what the argument is. The value in this exercise is the analysis of the types of evidence being used. Students need to recognize the use of anecdotes and be able to evaluate their effectiveness.

A Minimalism Experiment

Students will list and justify twenty items they will take on a year-long trip. This exercise might work well as either an anticipatory or culminating activity (or both!).

Minimalism Synthesis Prompt Project

Students will construct a synthesis prompt using the format of Question 1 on the AP English Language & Composition Exam. A rubric is provided!

Journal Prompt: Is There Really a Problem?

Students will write about consumerism being a response to an “underlying discontent.” This exercise might be used as an extension for students who finish early, an assignment for homework, or an outside essay.
