This pack includes 6 mentor texts that you can use with your writing mini-lessons. Included is one narrative, three opinion (persuasive essay, persuasive letter, and literary essay), and two informational texts (article and book). These writing samples were created to help give your students visual models for their own writing.
The texts were designed with the common core standards in mind and will work with 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grade students!
Here are some ideas for how you might use these:
-As you teach a mini-lesson, you can use the texts to model the ONE skill or strategy that you are teaching.
-Use prior to starting a unit. Students analyze the text to determine the structure and elements of the text type (i.e., narrative, opinion, information). Graphic Organizers and Worksheets are provided to help with this process.
-Use the texts as drafts. Students can discuss ways to improve and revise the pieces.
-Keep in writing folders to use as a reference throughout a unit.
-Use as you confer with students. When a student is struggling with an aspect of their writing, you can use the mentor text as an example.
-Give students their own copy of the texts and allow them to use highlighters and colored pens to mark it up with their ideas and observations.
