Description

This is an example, high-level, personable, and student-friendly syllabus you can use as a model for starting off and/or structuring your Advanced Placement Language and Composition course. It is useful for instructors who need help phrasing the different components of their syllabus. My syllabus contains the following components for modeling purposes: "Educator Information", "About the Course", "About Me", "About You (the students)", Required Supplies, Course Set-Up Tasks (E.g., accessing JSTOR, joining AP Classroom, etc.), Grading (E.g., with an emphasis on grading equity), Late Work Policy, Attendance, Classroom Procedures, Norms/Community Agreements, Bathroom Policy, Electronics Policy, APLAC Course Big Ideas/Skill Categories, APLAC Course Learning Strategies, APLAC Big Picture Concepts and Examples, Course Scope and Sequence of Units (I.e., you will see paragraph descriptions of all of my self-created units from start to finish), General Advice for Success in the Course, and Mental Health Encouragement.

Overall, I always found it helpful to look at colleagues' syllabi when preparing my own, so I'm hoping my syllabus (which I'm proud of) can help you too for either your course creation or course audit purposes with the College Board. I did my APSI summer training with Howard University, and it really paid off in terms of adding elements of diversity, inclusion, and culturally responsive education to my own APLAC course.

I designed authentic units to help students prepare for the three APLAC essays: rhetorical analysis essay, argument essay, and synthesis essay.
