What educators are saying

I assigned this to a 4th grade group working above grade level and needed a challenge. They loved it! They found the lesson engaging and really enjoyed the independent project at the end.
Extremely detailed resource. It was great giving my students background on etymology and having a project to further their knowledge. I had students make their books in groups, which sparked great discussion about the origin of words.

Description

Use this mini-research project to explore the history of the English language, word origins, and how words are added to the language.

In this enrichment lesson, students learn about word etymology, select a personally meaningful theme, and assemble a collection of terms related to that theme in a personal dictionary. The finished product is a booklet, poster, or other visual display with the terms and definitions as well as labels indicating the etymology of the words.
